As it’s a widely acceptable recipe so every region makes it according to their taste. Here is the traditional style bread halwa recipe that is common in Indian desserts. When I was kid, my mother used to make this halwa with leftover bread slices and we all like it and sometimes take it to school in lunch box. There is no rocket science to prepare this simple halwa recipe only you need bread slices, sugar, clarified butter (ghee), and almonds. The only trick is the process of making that makes it super scrumptious.
Last year, my Indian friend from Bombay sent me a bread halwa tray in Ramadan which was near to the taste of wedding style halwa. I was so excited to ask the actual recipe so she told me this one. I tried and it was awesome. My 8 years old love it and ate in no time.

How to Make Bread Halwa
Here are the step by step preparation to make this delicious halwa recipe.
Roast the almonds in a preheated pan on low heat.
Cut the sides of bread slices and make cubes.
In a pan, pour ghee and toast bread pieces from both sides.
Take out toasted bread pieces to use the same pan.
In a pan, pour water and let it boil for few minutes then add sugar and cook on medium heat to get a semi-thick sugar syrup.
Now add toasted bread slices in pan and give it good mix with rubber spatula.
As the bread combines and makes a homogenous form then add ghee and cook the halwa for about 2 to 3 minutes on low heat. Keep folding/stirring with a spatula during cooking. Don’t overcook!
Now the halwa is ready to serve! Garnish with almonds or desiccated coconut.

- Toasted bread makes a perfect sweet and nutty flavor in halwa.
- Use proper ratio of sugar syrup and bread. So the bread can easily soak the syrup to form a halwa. If there is more sugar syrup then it will become soft and thin in texture. If the syrup is less then the bread will be hard and stiffy.

Ingredients
- 4 slices bread
- 2 tablespoon Ghee
- ¼ cup Sugar (Brown/white)
- 2 teaspoon Almonds Ground
- ⅓ cup Water
Instructions
- Roast the nuts on slow heating pan to make it crunchy and nutty in flavor.
- Cut the bread slices in pieces.
- Toast bread slices with the help of ghee on low flame to make it cripsy. Take out and keep aside.
- Now in same pan, add water and let it boil.
- As the water starts to boil, add sugar and mix well using rubber spatula.
- Simmer the sugar until it starts to get thick.
- Now add toasted bread slices in sugar syrup and mix well.
- Gradually add ghee in bread and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Keep stirring to fold the bread while cooking.
- As the bread starts to change color and seperatate oil in pan then it's ready to serve.
- Add almonds in halwa and mix well.
- Garnish with almonds.
