Suji ka halwa is the most popular and quickest Semolina halva recipe that can make within 5 to 10 minutes. It's a roasted semolina dessert cooked with only sugar and milk, topped with nuts. Specifically prepared for special occasions like Eid, Ramadan, and festivals. I love to make it in breakfast to serve with Poori.

    • Suji Ka Halwa Recipe Pakistani

Suji halwa is the most targeted halwa recipe for Pakistani and Indian mothers who are constantly looking quick, healthy and nutritious option for their kids to pack in a lunch box. It's a recommended lunch box idea for school going kids.

My mother used to make this quick "Suji Halwa" on a daily basis because Semolina (Suji) is nutritious and healthy for growing kids. Semolina packed with large amounts of selenium, that helps to reduce infections and boost the immune system. It also helps to improve cardiovascular health that minimize the chances of heart attacks and heart failures.

    What is Suji Halwa?

Suji ka halwa is the quickest dessert or Pakistani and Indian sweet dish that people make with roasted semolina (sooji/rava), ghee, sugar, milk (water) or nuts.

Here I am sharing the simple, easy and traditional way to make suji halwa that I learnt from my mother. Some people used to make this with water and some used milk. All depends on your choices. If you use milk then it will be creamy and milky in taste and prepared with water will give you perfect roasted semolina taste. So both versions are irresistible and tasty.

Another way is to make the semolina halva in different colors like some people make it orange using edible food color. Another option is kesari (zafrani) suji halwa using few strands of saffron. Here, in this recipe I didn't use any color so you get perfect roasted semolina color. So if you are looking minimalist way to make suji ka halwa recipe Pakistani or Indian then this recipe is for you. Let's delve to make it!

    Ingredients

    Semolina (Suji) - 1 Cup
    Clarified Butter/Ghee - 1 Tbsp
    Green Cardamom Seeds - 20
    Sugar - ½ Cup
Desiccated Coconut (optional) - ⅓ Cup
    Milk - 1.5 Cups
    Dry fruits: Raisins & Almonds

How to Make Suji Ka Halwa

    1. In a pan, add clarified butter/ghee and heat it up a bit.
    2. Add green cardamom seeds to pop up on low temperature.
    3. Then add Semolina (suji) and roast it in ghee until it gets aromatic.
    4. As the Semolina starts roasting, add sugar to caramelise with it.
    5. Keep stirring the pan otherwise, semolina (Suji) will burn as the suji burning process is quite high.
    6. In the next step, add desiccated coconut and stir for few seconds.
    7. Add Milk in the pan and quickly stir to blend all ingredients together to form a halwa.
    8. Stir the pan for 2 to 3 minutes on low medium heat.
    9. As the halwa starts rolling up then place it on a platter to serve.
    10. Garnish with Almonds and other dry fruit that you like.

    Quick Tips

    • Make Halwa on low heat
    • To make in huge quantities multiply the ingredients accordingly.
    • Always roast the semolina on low flame. Keep stirring while roasting. Otherwise it will start to stick on pan bottom and give a burnt flavor in halwa.
    • Use nonstick pan to make halwa. Avoid pans that can easily stick the semolina on pan bottoms.
    • Use food color if you want to give it a color. You can use edible orange or yellow color.
    • Saffron can also be used to give zafrani color to halwa or make it without color.
    • You can make the halwa with milk or water. Make your choice accordingly.
    • Quickly stir the halwa after adding water or milk.
    • Granulated sugar can be used to make halwa otherwise you can use sugar syrup (sheera).

    Q & A

How long does suji halwa last?

Stored in refrigerator using an air tight container, it will last upto 8 to 10 days.

How to make 1 Kg suji halwa?

On the basis of general approximation, in 1 kg suji (1000 g), use 200 gm ghee, 1 liter water/milk and 500 gm sugar.
You can increase or decrease the quantity of sugar depending on taste buds.
In the same way, ghee will add lubrication and maintain the texture of halwa so add according to choice. Less ghee, halwa will be dry in form or vice versa.

Can I reheat the suji halwa?

Yes, you can! In a skillet pan on stove top, add a little water/milk and let it boil for a few minutes, and add halwa. Stir it properly and cook for about 1 to 2 minutes on slow heat. It will be ready like fresh halwa.

How to improve the taste of suji halwa?

Use roasted semolina, add green cardamom and cook on right temperature. Semolina burning process is high so make sure to roast the semolina in ghee at low heat. Don't cook halwa for long time!
