    What is Rooh Afza Drink?

    Rooh Afza is the best summer beverage that you can prepare in a variety of ways. It’s the most popular drink in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Middle Eastern region. Locally known as Sharbat, which is sweet and flowery in taste. In Arabic Rooh means soul and Afza is the refreshing vibes so as the name combines it truly depicts the essence of this red tint squash.

    It’s a creation of Hafiz Abdul Majeed, who formulated this drink in 1906 at new Delhi. In Pakistan, it’s been introduced by Hamdard founder Hakim Muhammad Saeed. Hamdard Rooh Afza is the best brand due to its taste and export quality.

    Rooh e afza is prepared with the extraction of different fruits that include apples, oranges, grapes, lemon, and grapefruit flavored with aqua rose and citrus flower that works as a stabilizer and flavoring agent. Allura red edible food color was added to mark the signature color of the Rooh afza drink. Sodium Benzoate is added as a food preservative.

    I used to have this as a drink in my school thermos and believe it was bliss to have chilled rooh afza after a tiring class. Due to the high sugar content, it stayed me active and productive. I miss those days and the flavor.

    You can easily get rooh afza syrup bottle from grocery store in Pakistani and India. In America, check it from costco, and walmart.

    It’s the best sharbat, squash, or beverage for Ramadan iftar. In South Asia, every house prepares a cool and refreshing jug of this soul-rejuvenating drink to break the fast. I love to have rooh afza milkshake in sehri that makes me productive throughout the day.

    Ingredients

    Rooh Afza syrup: Increase or decrease the quantity of syrup as per your taste. If you like a concentrated drink then add more otherwise 2 tablespoon in 500 ml is fine!
    Chilled Water: To make the drink
    Fresh Lemon: Used freshly squeezed lemon extract.
    Basil Seeds (Tukhm Balanga): used soaked seeds.
    Mint: Dried and crushed mint sprinkled to add a minty flavor to drink. This is an option and you can also use fresh mint leaves.
    Ice Cubes: To make it chilled!

    How to Make Rooh Afza Drink

    In a jug, add chilled water and pour rooh afza according to your taste and flavor. If you like extremely sweet then add more otherwise 2 tablespoon is enough in half liter water. Flavor the drink with freshly squeezed lemon juice. Soak the basil seed before 2 hours of making drink and add in drink with ice cubes. Give it a good mix or blend. Add fresh mint or dried mint to add minty flavor in your drink. This is optional and upto your choice to add mint.

    • Don’t add sugar as rooh afza itself is extremely sweet in taste.
    • If you are making citric flavor then add fresh lemons. Don’t add use ready-made lemon juice.
    • Colorless carbonated drinks can be used in place of water if you like soda flavor. Avoid carbonation if you are making it for Ramadan iftar.
    • Rooh afza is already flavored with rose so don’t add any other flavoring agent like rosewater, kewra, or other flavoring essences.
    • Always use soaked basil seeds (tukum e Balanga) in your drink.
    • Chia seeds can also be used.
    • Rooh afza drink can be stored in the refrigerator.
    • Never store Rooh Afza syrup bottles in the refrigerator or freezer.

    Ingredients

    • ⅓ cup Rooh Afza
    • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
    • 1 teaspoon Basil Seeds
    • ½ liter Chilled Water
    • 1 pinch Dry Mint
